On the Calendar: More A&E NewsApril 18, 2008
By: MELINDA BARGREEN The Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra has a new direction for 2008-09, a season that will see it branch out into new venues and programming under new CEO Jennifer McCausland and music director Fusao Kajima. The orchestra will present a "Music Meets Art" series; an opening-night gala in Meany Theater; and collaborations with such artistic partners as the Bellevue Arts Museum, Bellevue Opera and Ballet Bellevue. The opening-night concert Oct. 3 has three well-known soloists in Beethoven's Triple Concerto: keyboard legend Claude Frank (now in his early 80s), young cellist Matt Haimovitz (whose concerts in unusual venues have taken him to Seattle's Tractor Tavern, as well as to major concert halls) and Romanian-born violinist Andy Simionescu (a well-traveled chamber player and soloist). In the Bellevue Arts Museum, the Philharmonic will present the series "A Little Night Music," presenting the Seattle Baroque Orchestra, young violinist Marié Rossano and a Steinway Piano Series. The orchestra's main Masterworks series will include noted American composer Aaron Jay Kernis as guest conductor in a November concert that also will feature one of his compositions. Other highlights: a pops series including a family holiday concert and a Valentine's Day concert of romantic works, as well as the continuation of the "Little Maestro" and "Young Maestro" series for children from birth to 6, and 6-11, respectively. Coming up this month: Music of Asia, a two-day festival celebrating the music of Japan, China, Korea and Vietnam, launching a 2009-10 series, "Music of Asia."
